What’s Your Why? As a family photographer, I spend a lot of time talking with families about session locations, what to wear, and whether the kids will cooperate (the honest answer? We roll with it 😉).
But there’s one question I think matters even more: What’s your why?
Why do you want these photos?
At first, the answer might feel simple. “The kids are growing so fast.”
“We haven’t had photos taken in years.”
“I just want updated family pictures.”
And those are all good reasons. But if you pause for a moment, the real answer is often something deeper.
Maybe your why is because your toddler still reaches for your hand without hesitation.
Maybe it’s because your baby’s soft cheeks are already changing.
Maybe your teenager suddenly looks more grown-up than child, and you’re not quite sure how that happened.
Or maybe your why is simply this: You know this season won’t last forever.
As a family photographer based in Independence, Oregon, I’ve learned something beautiful about photographs: They grow more meaningful with time.
Right now, you might see the chaos. The wiggly toddler who refuses shoes. The child with grass-stained knees. The teenager giving you the “please don’t make me do this” smile.
But years from now? You’ll see something entirely different.
You’ll see the way your child looked at you. The way tiny fingers wrapped around yours. The laughter that spilled out between the posed moments. The connection.
That’s the real magic of family photography. We’re lucky to live in such a beautiful corner of Oregon, with so many lovely places to preserve these memories—golden open fields near Independence, riverside trails, charming downtown spots, quiet forest paths, and breathtaking locations throughout the Willamette Valley.
But truthfully? The backdrop is never the most important part. It’s you. Your family. Your story. Your why.
My goal is never to create stiff, overly perfect portraits. I want your session to feel relaxed, playful, and genuine—space for your kids to be kids, for laughter to happen naturally, for connection to unfold instead of being forced.
Because those are the images that matter most. The ones that bring you right back to this season of life.
So before you book your next family session, ask yourself: What’s your why? Because when you know the heart behind the photos, they become so much more than pretty images. They become part of your family’s story. And those ordinary, beautiful, fleeting moments?
They’re worth remembering.
